  5. Save A Tree is a text file printing utility designed to conserve
  6. paper by printing on 1 page what would normally use 2 or 4 pages.
  7.  
  8. Since Save A Tree only handles 'TEXT' files, I expect its primary
  9. audience will be programmers printing source code. Although, the
  10. word wrap option makes it useful for general text printing too.
  11.  
  12. Because of the small font sizes used, Save A Tree works best on
  13. high resolution printers.
  14.  
  15. Use of Save A Tree is free of charge. I encourage you to share
  16. it freely. Copies of the source (THINK C) may be obtained for
  17. $20 and a disk w/SASE.

  34. The checked icon in the Layout menu indicate the "current" layout.
  35. This is the layout that will be used when you print.
  36.  
  37. The "default" layout is the one that is initially checked when
  38. you run Save A Tree. This is the layout that is used for Finder
  39. printing (see below).

  44.  • Print… : Prints a 'TEXT' file using the current layout.
  45.  • Save Layouts : Saves layout settings (in Save A Tree's resource fork)
  46.  • Layout Setup… : Lets you configure the layouts.
  47.      - Radio Buttons: select which layout you're configuring.
  48.      - Header Font & Size: used for date, file name, and page number
  49.      - Body Font & Size: used for file contents
  50.      - Word Wrap: word wrap vs truncation
  51.      - Use Last Modified Date: current date vs date of last modification
  52.      - Lines Per Page Limit: upper limit on lines printed on a single page
  53.      - Tab Width: tab spacing
  54.      - Top & Left Margins:  (in points i.e. 1/72")
  55.      - Print Gridlines: print lines separating virtual pages of text
  56.      - Background PICT: shows underneath text (None is a blank PICT)
  57.      - V-Center & H-Center: vertically and/or horizontall center background PICT
  58.      - Scale To Fit: scale background PICT to page size (use for Bounding Box PICT)
  59.      - Make Default: make this layout the "default" layout
  60.      - Page Setup… : configure this layout's Page Setup settings 
  61.      - ≈ Possible Lines Per Page: guess at how many can fit on a page
  62.      - ≈ Characters Per Line: guess at how many can fit on a line

  67.  • Control L (ASCII 12) is interpreted as a page break.

  69.  • Tabs are handled by expanding them into blanks. So, lines with
  70.    multiple tabs only print correctly in monospaced fonts.

  75.  • Add your own by pasting PICTs into SaveATree's resource fork
  76.    Be sure to give each PICT a resource name since that is what
  77.    is used in the Layout dialog pop-up menu.

  80. Printing Multiple Files pre-System 7.0

  82. Print en masse from the Finder by selecting a group of TEXT files
  83. along with the Save A Tree application. Then select Print (or Open)
  84. from the File menu. The files will be printed in the default layout.

  89. Print en masse from the Finder by selecting the file(s) you want to
  90. print and dragging them over the Save A Tree application's icon (so
  91. it gets highlighted). Release the mouse and they will be printed.

  94. Irritating Page Setup Dialogs at First Time Startup

  96. The first time you run Save A Tree you may be prompted with some
  97. Page Setup dialogs. Sorry about this, but somehow I need to get
  98. print records with the proper page orientation. Currently, the only
  99. "Apple approved" method is via the Page Setup Dialog. I save them
  100. away, so this shouldn't happen again unless you get a fresh copy of
  101. Save A Tree or switch printer drivers.

  103. Note: Laserwriter users may be lucky enough to never deal with this
  104. since I have a hack that seems to work on them.
